Cover Class

Welcome to Cover Class

Here in Cover, Year 4, 5 and 6 learn and grow together. Cover class is taught by Mrs Brown. On a Monday afternoon, Mrs Tattersall teaches (Mrs Brown’s PPA).

In our classroom, Mr Tattersall and Miss Smith support children’s learning. Alongside working closely with the children in the classroom to support and extend their learning, they run intervention programmes and ensure that children’s individual needs are met. Working closely, we come together as a team to make sure every child feels happy, supported, and challenged.

Our classroom is a supportive and encouraging environment where we all feel safe to ‘have a go’. We are working on metacognition in our classroom to support us with our learning and to build our independence and confidence. Whether in Maths, Religious Education, Music or English, we work hard, try our best and know that mistakes mean we are learning.

We are looking forward to a fabulous year, and to seeing what brilliant things the Cover class achieve!

PE

PE takes place on Mondays and Thursdays. On these days children should come to school in PE kit. For safety reasons, earrings and other jewellery must be removed before PE sessions (preferably at home) and long hair tied back. If earrings are removed at school, please ensure your child can do this themselves and that you have provided them with somewhere safe to store them.

This term, Thursday’s PE will be swimming. Please ensure your child brings their swimming kit (appropriate swimwear, goggles, towel) into school with them each Thursday.

Learning at Home

Children have both a book-banded reading book closely matched to their reading level, and a reading for pleasure book which is selected from a much wider range. Please encourage your child to read these books regularly at home. In Cover class, the children are not given reading diaries as standard. Because most of the children are fluent readers, reading diaries can end up instead as a simple record of books they have read, rather than a parent-teacher conversation about how well a child is reading. However, if you would like your child to have a reading diary, please just let us know.

Children will receive new spellings on Monday, which will be tested the following Monday. Please support your child to practise their spellings regularly (at least 5 games a week) on Spelling Shed.

We also encourage support at home with times tables, as they form a vital foundation for many areas of maths. Secure knowledge of times tables (and the related division facts) builds confidence and improves attainment. We test times tables weekly in school, with children moving through ‘levels’ as they become fluent in each table. Your child will bring their times tables test home each week so you can practise these together. Children also have access to Times Table Rock Stars and Arithmagicians, and should use these regularly (at least 5 games a week) as part of their homework. This is especially important for Year 4 as this year is multiplication check year.

If you would prefer paper homework for spellings and maths, please speak to a member of staff.

Best wishes,
